Last month, didja see Google’s logo shaped like origami? It’s not the first time Google shared their love of origami. In 2009, Vanessa Gould, Director of the Peabody Award Winning film Between the Folds and featured origami artists were invited to Filmmakers at Google to talk about origami – an amazing blend of art and science.

Last Sunday, I attended the International Contemporary Furniture Fair with my colleagues and found many beautiful origami inspired furniture and accessories design. One in particular that stood out was Kanshin Lamps. The lamp shades are made from paper mulberry and folded into simple and elegant origami, which reminds me of Yuko Nishimura’s work.

Many thanks to Joe Keylon of BACE (Business and Creative Exchange) for sending me Simon Schubert’s jaw dropping portfolio.

What makes Mr. Schubert’s work exceptional is his ability to blend contrasting techniques (2d vs. 3d, negative vs. positive space, and valley vs. mountain folds) into objects, figures and people we can all relate to – all with a simple piece of paper.

Because paper’s very first fold quickly commits to memory, you can sense the experience, confidence, and patience Mr. Schubert has with each and every fold – and these traits inspire me deeply.

Currently you cannot send your eager child to origami school, fold for hours and produce a world renowned origami master. There are origami clubs, but not a curriculum dedicated to teaching origami. However there are design schools who might offer assignments that encourage origami inspired thinking!

Daniel Schipper who is a graduate from the Design Academy in Eindhoven (south of the Netherlands) discovered origami when he was assigned a class project to create a homeless shelter. When one is homeless, easy transport becomes a key design element. If you are lucky, you might have a sleeping bag; otherwise maybe you might consider Mr. Schipper’s shelter made from misprinted milk packaging.

Since then, he’s discovered the amazing powers of origami. He noticed that you don’t need extra screws, bells, or whistles to create a functional and beautiful product. He’s created more origami inspired items, including an awesome greenhouse and child’s chair for play! Asked how he learned origami? He replied, “Just foldin’ for days in a row until I find the perfect shape or construction method.”
